Interesting quotes from Saugus' #1 and #2, Alec Nelson and Brandon Jauregui:
The Saugus High girls' cross country team extended its streak of in-state meets without a loss to 26 in a row Saturday at the Clovis Invitational. But the Centurions boys' cross country team might have been the biggest success story among local programs competing at Woodward Park in Fresno.
A week after finishing third behind Corona and Del Campo of Fair Oaks at the Staub/Barnes Invitational, Saugus rebounded to win the large school varsity race, its first invitational victory of the season.
"Kenny Staub brought us down a lot," said senior Brandon Jauregui, who finished fourth, running 15 minutes, 45 seconds on the 5-kilometer course. "This is what we needed. We're ready and we're excited (for the remainder of the season). Making state is really important to me."
Alec Nelson (15:41) took second for Saugus, which received support from Joey Eledge, Kevin Heinemann, Camden McAlister and Ryan Melton to hold off Oak Ridge 113-116.
"(Saturday) was a big jump for a lot of guys," Nelson said. "(Brandon and I) got on them after (Staub/Barnes). We told them they had to work a lot harder if we wanted to make state."
